On Sunday, January 22, 2017, Flight Club hosted its annual “End of the Year Bottle Party.” The event serves as the culmination for the 2016 Club Year.
Each year, the Club earmarks funds from monthly dues, to be pooled and allocated to the selection of a single bottle, selected by Club Membership by majority vote. This year the Membership selected Pappy Van Winkle 20-Year, bottled in 2011 from old Stitzel-Weller stock, along with a current bottling of Old Rip Van Winkle.
This year’s event was held at All Things Barbecue (ATBBQ), a Wichita, Kansas business owned and operated by Don Cary, father of Club members Josh Cary and Jay Cary. The evening featured an opening cocktail and wine. Delicious appetizers and deserts were provided by Club members, while ATBBQ prepared a magnificent prime rib and smoked brisket.
As the meal wound down, Ryan Boyle, Club Awards Chair, took the helm and bestowed numerous “honors,” highlighting many of the year’s comical moments. One of the awards goes to the “Man of the Year,” which recognizes a single member’s extraordinary accomplishments. This year’s Man of the Year award was given to Stephen Netherton.
Following awards, the gentlemen retired to a corner to finally enjoy the two select pours. Without need for any formal review, the Club overwhelmingly agreed that both bottles lived up to their hype.
A tremendous thank you goes out to ATBBQ and each of the Club Member’s and their spouses for the tremendous amount of effort that went in to making this event exceptional.
