February 2017 Pick of the Month

Each month, Flight Club selects a club-endorsed “Pick of the Month.”  The parameters on the Pick of the Month are (a) locally available in Wichita, Kansas (b) under $40 and (c) something believed to be a good value or limited availability at the moment.  We invite everyone (Club members or not) to break open a bottle and us comment and feedback.

Russell’s Reserve is a mid- to top-shelf offering by Wild Turkey and the Campari Group.  As one of the products named after the worlds’ longest-tenured active master distiller Jimmy Russell, Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel was first launched in 2013.  Then it carried the “small batch” label, but in 2015 was rebranded as “single barrel.”

While you will likely find non-store-picks on the shelves across Wichita and beyond, and even  some store-picks elsewhere, this bottle was selected because R&J’s pricing is well below market value, and we believe this to be an exceptional pour at an exceptional price.  Please, comment below and let us know if you agree!

  1. Glad I picked up one of these. Here are my tasting notes:

Nose: salty caramel, citrus, rye spice
Palate: peppery tangerine, salted caramel, light oak, rye spice
Finish: warm spice, almond butter, long

Looking forward to more R&J store picks!

  2. Great bottle, even compared to the standard 10 Year.

Nose: Caramel, rye, dark fruit and some orange zest
Palate: Definitely some oak to go with the caramel, vanilla and more rye
Finish. Lingering caramel, toffee and spice.

This is a great bourbon at the $39 price. Good pick, R&J!

  3. Great Single Barrel!

Nose: Toffee, vanilla, oak and rye
Palate: Caramel and spices followed by oak.
Finish: Toffee and caramel with a wonderfully long finish.

    Awesome Barrel pick from R&J!

  4. Picked up a bottle in Independence, KS. $41.98.

    Muted caramel on the nose.
Spice palate, something else I’m not sure….sweet variety but not citrus.
Finish was moderate and a bit bitey.

Overall not too bad. I thought the nose and palate were both muted. Not too complex.
