Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye store picks are the next novelty in the Knob Creek lineup. Similar to Knob Creek Single Barrel Bourbon store picks, each of the Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye store picks are bottled from a single barrel selected by a particular retailer.
After our successful partnership with Tom’s Wine and Spirits to select a Knob Creek Single Barrel Bourbon, we again teamed up with Tom’s to select a Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye. To read about the selection process, follow this link.
After selecting the particular Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye barrel, we waited for the bottling and labeling process, and eagerly anticipated the barrel’s arrival.
The samples from Knob Creek are barrel proof. But, when barrel is emptied and the bottles are filled, the rye is slightly diluted to 115 proof. Between the bottling process and dilution, there can be some variation from the selected sample.
So, how did the finished product hold up? Check out our tasting notes below:
Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye Selected by Flight Club “Tom’s Handey Rye” (6 years, 3 months, 115 proof)
Nose: Rye herbal spice; light baking spice; Kit-Kats and vanilla wafers; pie crust; dry oak; brown sugar; red apple; new car leather; a hint of Beam funk; a bit of corn and grain. Very light burn given the proof, especially as the glass sits open with time.
Palate: Creamy; peppermint patty; rye spice; red apple; raspberry; milk chocolate; wafer cookies; vanilla; oak; leather; remarkably balanced with none of the flavors competing with or dominating another.
Finish: Medium; baking chocolate; mocha coffee; peppery rye bread; late arriving effervescent mint that leaves a clean finish.
Overall: We could not be happier with how this bottle turned out. It is characteristically a rye whiskey, with the complex and interesting spice and herbal flavors. Still, it does not lean too heavily in one particular direction. It has an underlying sweetness that will appeal to bourbon drinkers, too.
We highly recommend heading over to Tom’s Wine and Spirits to pick out a bottle before it’s too late.
Gentlemen devoted to the finest.
