Remus Repeal Reserve Series 1 Review

Remus Repeal Reserve Series 1 is part of MGP’s George Remus bourbon brand, which launched in 2016. As its name indicates, Remus Repeal Reserve Series 1 is the George Remus brand’s initial release for this premium bourbon. The bottle was released in November 2017, with Series 2 being released a year later.

Remus Repeal Reserve Series 1

Remus Repeal Reserve Series 1 features a blend of mature high-rye bourbons, distilled and aged at MGP in Indiana. Three bourbon were selected for the blend, with varying proportions:

    1. 50% of the blend comes from bourbon distilled in 2005. The mash bill for this bourbon is 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley.
    2. 15% of of the blend comes from bourbon distilled in 2006. The mash bill for this bourbon is 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley.
    3. And lastly, the remaining 35% of this blend comes from another bourbon distilled in 2006, but using the 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley mash bill.

Because the bottle was released in 2017, we can presume the blend contains bourbons aged 11 and 12 years.

Finally, the bourbon is bottled at 94 proof. Retail price is $75.

Remus Repeal Reserve Series 1 (blend of 11 and 12 year old bourbon, 94 proof)

Nose: Specialty popcorn blend, with buttered and caramel candied popcorn; brown sugar; nutmeg; muted citrus; apple; pear; some cookie dough. 3.5/5

Palate: Oak forward; plywood; then transitioning into baking spices, predominantly nutmeg; flat cola; brown M&Ms; creamed corn; orange peel oil. 4/5

Finish: Oak forward like the palate, with a hint of cocoa bitterness; grape skin; then turning towards pipe tobacco. 3.5/5

Overall: What was once a relatively easy task – finding 10+ year old MGP sourced bourbon – has become much more difficult. This bottle extends that opportunity with a high-rye blend. This specialty factor, coupled with the baking spice notes, results in a solid pour. Not containing any particular “wow” moments, most likely due to the proof, this bourbon remains approachable and complex. 3.5/5

Value: At $75, there is stiff competition at this price point. However, this satisfies given its inaugural release, well-aged MGP bourbon, high-rye blend yielding complexity, and eye-catching label. 3/5
